How to Resign from a Job in India

Resign in India only after you have accepted a written offer. Tell your manager first, send a short resignation email the same day, serve the notice in your contract, and leave with a handover and your relieving documents. A resignation letter does not need a list of grievances.

Resign in the right order

Accept the new offer, agree the joining date, speak to your manager, then email HR. Resigning by WhatsApp before that conversation creates confusion and a weak record. The email is the document that starts the notice clock, so send it on the day you intend notice to begin.

  • State the role, the last working day as per the contract, and an offer to hand over.
  • Keep the tone neutral. The email may be read by HR and a future background check.
  • Ask for written acceptance of the resignation and the last working day.

Hand the work over

A one- or two-page note is enough: open tasks, owners, logins the company owns, and where files live. Finish what you promised in the notice period. Taking copies of client data or code is not a handover. It is a breach.

  • Share the note with your manager and the person taking over.
  • Return equipment on the last day and get an acknowledgement.
  • Clear dues, advances and asset lists before you ask for the full and final.

Collect the letters you will need later

Future employers and background-verification vendors ask for a relieving letter, an experience letter and proof that the full and final settlement was completed. Request them before your last day, and store them with your Form 16 and pay slips.

  • Check that dates and your designation are correct.
  • Keep personal copies outside the company laptop.
  • Update your address with HR if the settlement will be posted.
In short

Written offer, manager, short email, handover, letters. Leave the complaints out of the resignation.

Questions people ask

Can my employer reject my resignation?

They can discuss the date, and the contract can require you to serve notice. They should still acknowledge a resignation that follows the contract. Keep a copy of what you sent.

Should I tell my team before my manager?

No. Your manager should hear it from you, first. Tell the team after the resignation is accepted.

What if I am on probation?

Probation often has a shorter notice. Read that clause and follow it. The same order applies: offer, conversation, email, handover.
