Salary Negotiation Tips in India

Salary negotiation in India is a conversation about the whole offer: fixed pay, variable pay, joining bonus, notice-period buyout and the date you start. Name a range you can explain from your current fixed pay and the role's market, then ask for the breakup in writing before you resign.

Know your numbers before the call

Separate fixed pay from variable pay, bonuses and benefits. Recruiters negotiate on annual CTC, but your monthly budget depends on fixed pay in hand. Write both down, plus the minimum fixed pay you will accept.

  • Use your latest pay slip and the appointment letter, not memory.
  • Decide the number below which you will walk away.
  • Read a salary guide for the role and city so the range is grounded.

State a range and the reason

Give a band, not a single rupee, and tie it to the work. "Based on my current fixed pay and this role's scope, I am looking at X to Y CTC, with fixed pay around Z." Then stop talking. The silence is part of the negotiation.

  • Negotiate fixed pay first. A large variable on top of a low fixed number is a weaker offer.
  • Ask what the band for the level is, if they will share it.
  • Avoid inventing a competing offer you do not have.

Close only when the offer is in writing

A verbal "we can do that" is not an offer. Wait for the letter with CTC breakup, location, title, probation and joining date. Compare it with your walk-away number, then accept or decline in writing.

  • Check provident fund, gratuity and insurance so you know what is cash.
  • Confirm whether the variable is guaranteed or performance-linked.
  • Resign only after you have accepted the written offer.
In short

Negotiate fixed pay, get the breakup in writing, and resign only after you accept.

Questions people ask

Should I share my current salary?

Many Indian employers still ask. If you share it, share fixed and variable separately. You can also say the range you are targeting for the new role and why.

Is a 30 percent hike a rule?

No. The right number depends on the role, the city, your current pay and how scarce the skill is. A percentage without that context is a rumour.

Can I negotiate after accepting?

Accepting and then reopening pay damages trust and can lose the offer. Negotiate before you sign.
