HR salary in India depends on whether you hire, run employee relations, or partner with a business leader. A talent-acquisition recruiter, an HR generalist and an HR business partner are quoted differently, even inside one company. Compare the book of work, the industry and fixed pay, not the HR label alone.
Separate recruiting from generalist work
Recruiters are priced on the roles they can close and the domain they know. Generalists are priced on the employee lifecycle they can run without escalation. Mixing the two in one title usually means the offer follows the cheaper of the two jobs.
- State the roles you have closed, or the employee processes you have owned.
- Name the industry. Tech recruiting and manufacturing HR are different markets.
- Ask whether incentives are paid on joins, and what happens if a joiner leaves early.
What raises the band
Full-cycle hiring for hard-to-fill roles, experience with Indian labour compliance, and the ability to coach hiring managers are the experiences that move pay. A tool certificate without those outcomes does not.
- Describe a role family you can hire without a script.
- Mention statutory exposure carefully and accurately: PF, gratuity, shops and establishments, or standing orders, only if you have handled them.
- Show a hiring-manager disagreement you resolved.
Read an HR offer the way you would read any other
Watch for a low fixed salary plus a large incentive that depends on hires you do not control. Ask the target, the average attainment, and whether the incentive is capped.
- Get the split between fixed pay and incentive in writing.
- Ask who you report to and how big the employee base is.
- Confirm the city and travel. Multi-site HR is a different job.
Price the work: recruiting, generalist HR, or business partnering. Then compare fixed pay.
Questions people ask
Do recruiters earn more than HR generalists?
- Specialist recruiters in scarce domains often have higher variable pay. Generalists in large sites can have higher fixed pay. Compare the letter, not the stereotype.
Does an MBA in HR change the offer?
- It can open a first conversation. Offers for experienced HR follow the processes and hiring you have already run.
Should incentives be counted in CTC?
- They are often included. Ask what was actually paid last year. Count only a realistic figure when you compare offers.
