Software engineer salary in India is a range, not a single number. Entry offers, mid-level product roles and staff engineers are quoted in different bands, and Bengaluru product companies often quote higher fixed pay than services roles in smaller cities. Compare fixed pay, not just CTC, and treat any public "average" as a starting point for questions.
What changes the number
The same title pays differently by city, by whether the company sells software or staffs projects, and by the stack the team is hiring for. A backend engineer who has shipped in production is not priced like a fresher with a training certificate.
- Product companies and well-funded startups often quote a higher fixed component than large services firms.
- Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune show up most often in engineering searches. Cost of living still matters.
- Scarce skills, such as production experience in a specific stack, move an offer more than years on a resume.
Read the breakup before you compare
Ask for fixed pay, variable pay, employee provident fund, gratuity and any stock or joining bonus as separate lines. Two offers with the same CTC can leave you with very different monthly pay.
- Negotiate the fixed number first.
- Ask whether variable pay has been paid in recent years, and against which goals.
- Stock is a possibility. It is not rent money until you know the vesting rules.
Use the band when you talk pay
State a range tied to your current fixed pay and the scope of the role. Invite the employer to share their band for the level. A number you cannot explain, copied from a forum, is easy to dismiss.
- Bring your last three pay slips if they ask for current compensation.
- Separate "I want this CTC" from "I need this fixed pay in hand".
- Get the agreed breakup into the offer letter before you resign.
Compare fixed pay, city and the work. A higher CTC with a large variable portion can be the weaker offer.
Questions people ask
Why do two software engineers with the same experience earn different pay?
- City, company type, stack and the scope of the last role all change the quote. Years of experience alone do not set the offer.
Should I share my current CTC?
- If you share it, split fixed and variable. Also say the range you want for the new role and why the scope supports it.
Do these bands include bonuses?
- Public conversation usually mixes them. Always ask for the line-by-line breakup. This guide is a way to ask better questions, not a promise of a figure.
