Chennai salaries for IT services, product teams and industrial companies should be compared role by role. The city can offer a lower cost of housing than Mumbai or Bengaluru, which makes a slightly lower CTC competitive. It does not make every offer a good one. Read fixed pay, the campus and the work.
Separate services offers from product offers
Chennai has a deep IT services market and a smaller set of product employers. Services letters often contain many allowances. Product letters may put more into fixed pay or equity. Ask for a monthly illustration either way.
- List which allowances need bills.
- Ask the variable payout for your grade last year.
- Confirm whether the project can move you to another city.
Use the cost of living as a comparison, not a slogan
Housing can be more manageable here than in Mumbai. That helps only after you know the office location and the shift. A night shift on the edge of the city has its own costs.
- Price rent near the office days you must attend.
- Ask about shift allowance and transport after late hours.
- Compare monthly surplus, not the CTC rank of the city.
Ask how pay grows after you join
A fair starting CTC with a clear review cycle can beat a slightly higher CTC with no review for two years. Ask when salaries are reviewed and what a typical move to the next grade requires.
- Get the probation length and confirmation pay in the letter.
- Ask whether the role is a process seat or a skill you will deepen.
- Compare that answer with the reason you are switching.
A Chennai offer is competitive when fixed monthly pay and the work both hold up, not because the city is "cheaper".
Questions people ask
Are Chennai IT salaries lower than Bengaluru?
- For many similar services roles they are quoted a little lower, and housing may cost less. Product and scarce-skill roles can be close. Compare the letters.
Should I accept a project that can transfer me?
- Only if you are willing to move. Ask how often transfers happen and whether pay is revised when the city changes.
What should be in the offer besides CTC?
- Title, level, location, probation, notice period, fixed and variable split, and the appraisal month.
